let’s assume for a second the stranger receiving your pics was a psycho…. here’s what can happen…. i’m using an iPHONE 4 for this example :
1) you decide to send a cute pic to a stranger. harmless enough.
2) They can save the picture to their phone. synchronize on the computer… and can check the geo tags. on an ipHONE this is done simply by going to PHOTOS >> PLACES on the bottom right… then they can zoom into the map and see your pics…. NOW they have the location where you took the pic. if this was at home… they know where you live now.
You probably want to know how to turn this off right? personally, i leave it on. any cute girls wanna come to my place and harass me… by all means…. actually, i like having the geo tags… so i can see where i took my pics… and i usually send pics to people that i know and am sending pictures that aren’t risque so much….but i digress… let’s say you DO absolutely want to turn this off…. the first step is when you FIRST get your phone… and open the camera, it’ll ask you if you want to ALLOW the phone to use your GEO information. say NO. problem solved. but lets’ assume you DID agree…. and still want it off.
on an iphone 4 :
done. now you can send your nudy pics again, safely to that creepy stranger. he won’t know where you live.
really though, this should be made common knowledge and people need to start thinking more about the implications of what others can do with data and info they get from them.
