the first thing to get out of the way …. is how gross this movie is. guys smacking people over the head with hammers, fingernails being ripped off, kneecaps getting ripped out… blood splurting out of esophagi… you get the picture.
with that said, contrary to popular reviews, i felt this movie did a good job of balancing action, gore, and good story telling. the story, while not original, was compelling and the acting was top notch. Jude Law and Forest Whitaker both do an amazing job to carry the tale forward.
Even more interesting; while the main story is nothing original, the execution is quite original. From the true “playfullness” the Repo Men exhibit when on the hunt, to the raw sexuality jude law’s character and the main love interest show while ripping each other’s bodies apart and shoving giant bar-code scanners into places the sun don’t shine….
not to mention the decent cinematography, great fashion/colors, and the surprising plot twists, all come together in a way that makes this a worthwhile movie. Positives aside, i wish the story was a bit more robust, a bit more played out, and perhaps it would have been better to delve deeper into the characters….
Overall, i’d say 8 out of 10.
