Initially when you install the windows 7 on Bootcamp, and try to get Parallels 5 to run and connect to the partition… it’ll go through the basic install… setup… then when it tries to startup the windows system you’ll get an error.
basically, the reason this is happening is because the parallels system isn’t able to write and modify the bootcamp partition… i’m loosely understanding this, but the solution is to get the ball rolling on getting the underlying layers to play nice with each other.
One solution… is Media Four’s MACDRIVE 8. this essentially is used to allow read/write access between mac OS X and windows. as they are formatted differently, they cannot normally write to each other without some form of translator.
here’s the steps :
1) install windows 7 bootcamp
2) get MEDIA FOUR MACDRIVE 8 … you can use the trial version of course…
3) install the MACDRIVE 8 software… no configuration really necessary… but it’ll be always running in the background.
4) restart in mac osx and use parallels to start up your BOOTCAMP partition
it will connect, ask you to upgrade. and … go ahead and do the upgrade and restart.
boom. good to go.
While you might have macdrive 8 as a trial version… you’ll have to decide if you want to purchase eventually. To be honest, I’d recommend you do so. This tool, which acts similar to a driver in the background acts as a decoder for all MAC partitions… ipods, drives, etc…. and allows you to write to them direclty from the windows environment. You’ll soon find this invaluable if you work in both environments.
