funny thing i just thought about today…
so japanese movies… and english movies that have japanese translations… either way… i notice they tend to translate the “social” meaning of words… not the actual direct meaning.
for example… lets say its a scene with a bunch of kids… and the students are told to clean the school (common thing here)… the words that come out… in japanese might be like… “souji wo tanoshimashou…”
now the SOCIAL meaning (the one they translate) is… “let’s clean…” however…. the ACTUAL words mean… “Let’S ENJOY CLEANING…”
but… in american culture… european too… we would not say to kids “Let’s enjoy” something like cleaning… for two reasons…
1) you are telling them to clean… Let’s implies i will join you…. a group activity….
2) enjoy… cleaning is not something to be enjoyed regularly…

however… in japan they use it in order to imply the enjoyment of a group activity. so my dilemma lately is… which one should be translated?????

see… if they use actual translations… there would be some heavy duty culture shocks going on! people would freak out…. but theywould learn about the other cultures and make the movies more interesting as well….
however… transalting the culture makes it more simple and easy to understand for the foreign comunities….
