Sony Ericsson has come out with their Q2 earnings report.
the bad news? their profit is down 97%. yeah. that means no growth.
the good news? 2,000 people will now get a chance to look for new jobs! (that means sony’s firing 2,000 people)
why did this happen? the report, apparently, states that their mid to high end phones aren’t selling. ya think?
Let’s look at the options :
a mid to high end phone for sony… goes for anywhere from $400 to $1,000
and does roughly what any windows mobile phone like the Blackjack can do for $200. Granted, sony’s LOOK cooler… but ifyour looking for style and NOT substance…. you can get an iphone with contract at ATT for $200 as well.
the only phones that are still selling? phones that are cheap and phones in emerging markets. that means phones like the W880, and phones that are cheaper than $100.
the point is this… whether i like Apple or not…. they started a trend. they created the iphone and said that for LESS THAN $400 you can get a stylish, easy to use, relatively useful, durable phone… anything above that… is out of the question. Seriously.. sony doesn’t sell to businesses. they market the “fashionable” crowd. well… if you were “fashionable”… would you rather buy iphone for $200 or Sony for $800??? if both looked good and both did what you wanted.
