Two monks live on a floating temple that rests on a lake in a valley in korea… a young man and an old man.
They are visited by a sick young woman… asking for their help to heal her. The young man falls in love with her and they leave the temple. The old man whishes him well but asks him to be mindful of desires.
The movie follows what can happen if we give in to temptations… and makes an example of how the simple things in life can bring us a peace that no one or thing could ever give us. It does this very well by using phenomenal imagery, amazingly good communication through body language… and allowing us to feel some emotions… that do not actually discourage greed… just simply ask the viewers to be mindful of it… and use it in a way to help us, those around us, and to be selfish only when it can benefit others as well. Carry a weight to gain a favor… and ask for favors only when willing to return kindness… but never put burdens on others that they cannot carry.
In the end… the world of man is a place of many temptations.
What one man desires… others desire as well.
This movie explains these things well and left me with a sense of determination… hoping for a better tomorrow… yet not asking for one. Simply a feeling that I whatever happens… it will happen regardless. My efforts can sway the tides … but the ocean still moves forward. Its interesting how the movie doesn’t actually say that you CANNOT change your future. No infact… it kinda shows you that you have many choices… it simply says that the world around you also has choices against you…. You can react and act in your best efforts… increase % of getting what you want… but you cannot guarantee anything.
The miracle of the movie was how this temple… not the monks… sees the changing of the seasons… how the world goes by… regardless of what happens inside. Thus the title.
