I’ll come out and say directly… this movie was a bit of a letdown. It’s possible i expected too much… After all, the premise is one that hits close to home for me. A grown man has depended on a make-believe role model / imaginary friend to guide his moral compass through life. this is EXACTLY how Alen Knight came to be for me… and still has a very similar presence in my life…. But… while i can say i enjoyed the movie myself… and found a connection… i cannot say the movie itself is good.
The concept at first sounds promising, and has a lot of meat to work with… however outside of the buildup with a decent introduction… the movie quickly falls flat on its face. It asks the viewer to feel sympathy and become emotionally tied to characters that really don’t have much going on. A young girl who lost her sister when she was too young to remember clearly what happened, a protagonist… who outside of social awkwardness… doesn’t really have any problems, and a successful vascular surgeon who neglects her unsocial husband…. none of which actually deserve a movie to cover the subject….
Worst of all, the story asks the viewer tolerate and feel sympathy for an adult who outside of sexual contact, all but pushes himself onto an underage girl… and dislike a wife who asks only that her husband pay attention to her a little bit…
Surely, i can say the directors did a good job, and the actors (particularly Ryan Reynolds) nailed the characters…. It’s a cute enough movie, and worth watching i suppose… on a bored rainy sunday….
